1) How has your following developed over time?
My Instagram page has changed a lot over the past 2 years as I started to feel more and more passionate about social media and photography in 2016. I went from having Instagram just as something I would look at here and there to spending a lot of time on it. My followers were mainly from Europe and a small percentage from the Middle East region, but when I started revamping my Instagram and hitting the cool places in Dubai I noticed my local following started to increase.
I’ve also always been passionate about artsy things, pretty cafes and street-style. After getting myself a professional camera I started creating content at Dubai’s hot spots, new places such as cafes, art galleries, fashion events etc. Joining the “igersdubai” group for a while also helped me to build an even stronger local Instagram following.
2) Do you think it’s important to build a local following on Instagram?
I do. If you’re based in a specific city it’s important to show that you have an understanding of the local market. As an expat in Dubai especially it helps to show my followers the places and things I recommend visiting and doing. I’ve here for 8 years now and I love it when I get messages from random people asking me for “Dubai recommendations” or thanking me for posting a specific photo, which inspired them to visit. As an influencer, it’s also very important to build a strong local Instagram following. 3) What are your top tips on building a local Instagram following?
Create beautiful content: I personally love everything blue, white and grey so my feed has a certain aesthetic which I maintain with a few photo apps such VSCO, Lightroom and UNUM. It really helps me to stand out and attract followers, both local and non-local.
I always try to highlight cool spots, not only in my posts but also in my stories as people are more engaged with stories nowadays. Whether I go to a cool new beach or a trendy event, I normally post about it on my Instagram, mostly on my stories, which does help to build a strong local following. People always want to see new local places/activities to try out. It also leads to local “word of mouth” because they share my stories with their friends and the tail-on effect means my local Instagram following grows.
4) Did you find it difficult to connect with local followers?
At first yes as I wasn’t quite sure what to post about or what people are interested in. To be honest I realised you have to post about things you enjoy and would like your followers to see. I always try to keep it authentic whether I post images or create stories. I don’t stage anything and I think this really helps to connect with local followers. As long as you are being yourself it’s also easier to connect with people. I have actually made some great friends in Dubai via Instagram.
5) What are your top local hashtags that you like to use to connect with a local Instagram following?
I normally use hashtags that suit my content, so if I am at one of my favourite cafés, I would use that hashtag e.g. #aubainedubai
I also use hashtags like #dubaimarina #dubaifitfam #mydubai or #weekendsindubai to connect. #mydubai is a very popular one, but your post does get lost since everyone is using the hashtag.
Just be open to try new things and open to explore what Dubai has to offer. Go to your local favourite restaurant, go to events, try regional food, clothing and drinks. Once you put yourself in the shoes of those living in Dubai you will be able to connect and grow.

1) How has your following developed over time?
In the very beginning of my Instagram life I had mostly Brazilians and Italian followers. They were mostly my friends, colleagues and family members. My audience in Dubai has grown very slowly to be honest and took me a while to have a substantial number of locals. In addiction to that every time I travel I get some new followers from that country too.
2) Do you think it’s important to build a local following on Instagram?
I think that it depends on your niche. In my case I wanted to be relevant in Dubai from the beginning. My Instagram handle @365_indubai fundamentally focuses on exploring Dubai 365 days of the year so it made sense to build a local Instagram following. So I’m talking about cool stuff going on in Dubai for people that live here in Dubai.
3) What are your top tips on building a local Instagram following?
Just be open to try new things and open to explore what Dubai has to offer. Go to your local favourite restaurant, go to events, try regional food, clothing and drinks. Once you put yourself in the shoes of those living in Dubai you will be able to connect and grow your local Instagram following. If you have some friends here ask them to post about you. I asked almost everyone I knew in Dubai to post about my Instagram and that worked beautifully.
4) Did you find it difficult to connect with local followers?
In the beginning it was but over time I learned the local preferences, the local way of connecting online (yes there is such a thing) and it got so much easier. I always kept my DMs open and always talked to people. They told me exactly their thoughts, what they like or dislike and this was how I built my bridge.
5) Was there anything that you did that helped to accelerate the growth of your local Instagram following?
There is no way around it; you have to connect with people. That’s what Instagram is about. For me it was a slow growth based on a lot of effort. For example, every single time I go to an event, when I get home I jump on Instagram and make sure to leave a comment on everybody else’s profiles that was in that event too. When I use a specific hashtag, I take time to connect with others that are using that hashtag too. When a girl is constantly commenting on my posts I just go ahead and follow her too. It’s incredible how many friends I’ve made like this.
Another thing that I have to say is, be yourself. Whether you’re having a beautiful day or a bad day, if you like or dislike something; just tell your followers exactly what is on your mind. I think it’s pretty obvious when you are playing a part. That just sends out a message that you are underestimating your followers and that is a NO NO. Always respect the time and attention they are giving you!

#myDubai is definitely amazing but can be too general. I like to go very specific with #whatToWearDubai #whatToeatDubai #wereToGoDubai and so on.

Instagram meet ups in Dubai helped a lot as I met a lot of people with similar interests to me. The day I attended Instagram meet ups, that’s the time I saw that my local following was improving and increasing.

1) How has your following developed over time?
My following developed when I started collaborating with brands globally and locally and had my work reposted on their pages with a large number of followings too. Also, Instagram meet ups in Dubai helped a lot as I met a lot of people with similar interests to me.
2) Do you think it’s important to build a local following on Instagram?
Yes, it’s important to build your local following as most of the brands you are working with or you’re gonna be working with are based in the country you’re living in. Sometimes brands are very particular about which country you have the largest audience interacting.
3) What are your top tips on building a local following?
• Compose your Instagram profile bio.
• Put your location and where are you based (geotags).
• Attend Instagram meet ups.
• Use the local hashtags
• Don’t be afraid to work with local brands and clients
4) Did you find it difficult to connect with local followers?
At first, yes. Because I started producing content for brands outside Dubai. The day I attended Instagram meet ups, that’s the time I saw that my local following was improving and increasing.
5) Was there anything that you did that helped to accelerate the growth of your local following?
Large amount of followers don’t just come overnight. In my case, it happened when you start building consistent quality content. That’s when people will start following you.

1) How has your following developed over time?
Despite having an Instagram account for years I’ve only started dedicating myself to it more seriously end of last year. Most of my followers by then were Portuguese (where I am from), but over this past year my account grew from about 600 followers to almost 6K now, and most of my followers are from the UAE and Dubai.
2) Do you think it’s important to build a local following on Instagram?
Yes, I do believe it’s important for some reasons. People will follow you because they relate. I also believe that our followers are a small community and family that we build over the years, so if they live in the same city/country that’s more likely to happen. Also, when you’re reviewing products and items, or working with brands, it’s important that people can easily access those products and buy them if they want, and this is of course crucial for brands when choosing influencers to promote their products.
3) What are your top tips on building a local following?
A few tips would be create content showcasing the city, whenever possible, and hashtag locations and venues. Engage with other bloggers and influencers from your city/country. Post about products and services available in your county.
4) Did you find it difficult to connect with local followers?
I don’t think it’s difficult. It definitely takes time, which I don’t always have, but engaging with my followers is the best way to build a local community of followers and keep them following you.
5) Was there anything that you did that helped to accelerate the growth of your local following?
I would say for me it has been a slow growth, and as tempting as it sounds to engage on those fake methods to help you grow faster, I try to stay true to myself, with my followers and the brands I’ve been working with. I focus more on creating great quality content and appreciate every new follower I get through my hard and honest work. But I would say posting every day at least once or twice helps to keep things moving.
