Only a minority of social media influencers run their Instagram profile or blog full time. Being an influencer could be a passion project. Perhaps you haven’t quite reached the income that allows you to kick in your day job.

Whatever the situation, it can be a precarious balancing act maintaining the perfect feed, working full time and/or caring for your family. It’s important to leverage your time as much as possible. Here are our top tips for doing so:

Allocating time to creating content

At Style By Trade, we have full time day jobs as well as a little family to care for so finding the time to physically shoot new content can be tricky. This is when it really comes down to being organised:

  • Plan ahead:
    Have your shots perfectly art directed in your mind before you start shooting. Your outfit, location and aesthetic should already be ironed out before your shoot day. There’s nothing worse then burning time trying to find the right location or deciding which outfit to wear from the boot of your car. Also consider the time of the day. On weekends, shoot first thing in the morning to capture that impressive light and avoid the swarms of people who are still sleeping in!
  • Allocate time:
    Just like you diarise a lunch date, schedule dates in your diary to allocate to your content creation. This way you aren’t multitasking, you can focus on the creativity at hand and have sufficient time to nail your shots.
  • Schedule a number of shots in the one session:
    We personally find allocating half a day every weekend to shoot our content for the whole week works best. This way you’re condensing your time into one session and you then have a whole week’s worth of content up your sleeve.

Scheduling apps

With the fast pace of life, we often have a million things running through our minds. It’s very easy to lose track of what is on the to-do list. This is where technology can really assist with keeping you organised.

Scheduling apps in particular are super helpful tools to pre-load your posts. Within an hour you can have a week’s worth of images uploaded, captions edited and times for posts scheduled.

The app can also send you a notification to remind you it’s posting time. With a click of a button, you’re live. There is a plethora of different scheduling apps out there but Later is a trusty, free one to start with.

Prioritising tasks

As any influencer will know, there is a never-ending amount of daily tasks to nail in order to run your Instagram profile successfully. Once you have your content shot and posts scheduled as per the above, you’ve got time for those daily tasks.

I’ve listed our top three essential daily tasks to prioritise and tick off within half an hour:

  1. Engaging with your audience:
    Ensure that you spend even 10 minutes a day replying to comments/e-mails and engaging with your followers. This can even take place while waiting for your morning coffee or sitting on the train on your way to work. Instagram is all about communicating so if you’re a one sided communicator, it’s a recipe for disaster.
  2. Connecting with new clients and collaborators:
    This can also be as quick as sending one e-mail a day to a potential new client or creative to collaborate with. You need to keep your content new and fresh. While we don’t condone copy and paste emails, you can use an email template to optimise your time. Just ensure that you personalise the e-mail for each different person you’re contacting.
  3. Planning your content:
    We mentioned in our first tip about having your shot planned in advance. This can be as simple and manageable as planning one shot a day. Have your subject/product in mind, decide where to shoot and choose the style/aesthetic you want to achieve. This allows for a streamlined shoot day and helps you to make the most of the time you’ve allocated for shooting. When thoughtfully planned, you can consider the overall feel and direction of your content.

There you are folks! Managing full time commitments and being an influencer can be done, albeit tricky at times! There will be days you’re too busy or days you have some extra time. It’s all about being organised and finding your routine.
