TikTok features brands and creators need to know

The TikTok features that matter most are the ones that turn a single video into reach, participation and revenue: recording and editing, sounds, LIVE, Duets, Stitch, Stories, video replies and the Creator Marketplace.

TikTok is no longer the new platform you experiment with on the side. With over 1.5 billion monthly active users, it’s where short-form video sets the pace for the rest of social. For brands and creators, the question isn’t whether to be on it. It’s whether you’re using the native features that the platform actually rewards.

This guide walks through every TikTok feature worth knowing, what each one does, and where it fits in a content plan.

The short version:

  • TikTok’s core toolkit covers recording, editing, sounds, voiceover, LIVE, Duets, Stitch, Stories, video replies and hashtags.
  • Native features beat re-posted content. TikTok favours video made with its own tools.
  • Brand-facing features like Pulse and the Creator Marketplace connect commercial intent to creator distribution.
  • The features are table stakes. Turning them into sustained relevance is the harder, more valuable problem.

What are the main TikTok features?

TikTok’s feature set spans creation, editing, distribution and collaboration. The ones brands and creators use most:

  • Video recording
  • Video editing
  • TikTok sounds
  • Voiceover and voice filters
  • TikTok LIVE
  • TikTok Pulse
  • TikTok Creator Marketplace
  • Expanded translation
  • Direct messaging
  • Duets and reactions
  • Stitch
  • TikTok Stories
  • Video replies
  • Hashtags

Here’s how each one works.

Video recording

TikTok was built for video, so recording in-app is fast. Clips that started life capped at 15 seconds can now run up to 10 minutes, opening the door to longer, more in-depth content. Already shot something elsewhere? Upload it directly. As a rule, though, content made inside the app, using its native tools, tends to perform better than imported video.

Video editing

Filters and effects are a big part of why the app caught on. From makeup filters to eye-colour changes to stickers, TikTok gives creators a wide editing palette. You can also pull in stock photos and video, layer on captions, and shape a raw clip into something distinct.

TikTok sounds

Sounds are central to how TikTok works. Rather than asking every user to source their own audio, the app lets you attach a track from a vast library, which makes content quicker to produce and more engaging to watch.

One caution: there are limits on which sounds you can use depending on your account type. Personal accounts can use both ‘sounds’ and ‘commercial sounds’; business accounts are restricted to commercial sounds. If you’re a brand, plan around the commercial library from the start.

Voiceover and voice filters

Audio editing is deep. Once you’ve recorded, you can reshape the audio, make it deeper or softer, add robotic or atmospheric effects, or record over the top to layer multiple sounds.

TikTok LIVE

Live streaming carries no time limit. You need to be 18 or older, and you keep access to your usual filters and effects. Creators can also earn through LIVE Gifts and Diamonds, making LIVE both a community-building and a monetisation channel.

TikTok Pulse

TikTok Pulse places brand ads alongside the platform’s top-performing content, so paid placements run next to the videos already winning attention. For brands, it’s a way to buy proximity to relevance rather than just impressions.

TikTok Creator Marketplace

For creators who rely on brand partnerships, the Creator Marketplace is a way to apply directly to upcoming campaigns rather than waiting to be discovered. You can filter by campaign type to see your options clearly. It’s a useful front door, though the brands building serious creator programmes tend to work through partners who can match the right creators to the right brief at scale.

Expanded translation

Language no longer caps your reach. TikTok’s expanded translation covers text stickers and auto-generated captions. To switch it on, go to Settings, then Language, then Translation language, and enable ‘Always show translation’.

Direct messaging

TikTok isn’t only a broadcast platform. You can send and receive direct messages with mutual followers, suggested friends and existing contacts, another channel for building relationships with your audience and with other creators.

TikTok specialises in video, but there’s real variety within that. These are the formats and collaboration features that drive the most participation.

Duets and reactions

You’ve seen the side-by-side videos: two recordings running together, one reacting to or building on the other. Duets are one of the strongest ways to interact with other creators and add your own take to existing content.

You control who can Duet your videos through your Privacy and Safety settings.

Stitch

Stitch is another way to combine two videos, but here they play one after the other rather than side by side. Use it to show the result of following someone’s instructions, answer a question, add commentary, or compare two things. Stitched videos travel well because they carry context and a payoff.

TikTok Stories

Like Stories elsewhere, these are short videos that disappear after 24 hours. On TikTok they run up to 15 seconds and are built for lighter, more spontaneous posting, a low-stakes way to stay present without overthinking your wider content strategy.

Video replies

The TikTok algorithm runs on participation, and the comments section is where a lot of it happens. TikTok lets creators reply to a comment with a video: tap a comment, record your response, and the comment attaches to the new video as a sticker. The reply appears both in the comments and on your profile, turning one question into fresh content.

Hashtags

Don’t overlook hashtags. As on any platform, they describe your video and group it with related content, but on TikTok they can also start trends and spin up entire content categories. #BookTok is the clearest example: a community big enough that authors have reported major sales spikes once their books gained traction there.

How we see it

Knowing the features is the easy part. The hard part is the system around them: which formats fit which objectives, how creators distribute across them, and how attention turns into measurable growth instead of a string of one-off posts.

That’s the shift worth making: from chasing individual features to building a programme that uses them deliberately. Vamp is an official TikTok Creative Marketing Partner, and we design creator-led growth systems on TikTok for brands that want influence to perform, not just appear.

FAQs

Which TikTok features should a brand prioritise?

Start with native creation tools, recording, sounds and editing, because TikTok favours content made in-app over re-posts. Then layer in collaboration formats like Duets and Stitch to tap existing communities, and use Pulse when you want paid placement next to high-performing content.

Do TikTok features differ between personal and business accounts?

Yes. The clearest difference is sounds: personal accounts can use both standard and commercial sounds, while business accounts are limited to the commercial library. Plan your audio strategy around that restriction from the outset.

How can creators get on a brand’s radar through TikTok features?

The Creator Marketplace lets creators apply directly to campaigns and filter by type. Beyond that, consistency, native formats and a clear niche do more than any single feature. They make you easy for the right brands and partners to find.

TikTok features are the toolkit. A system is what makes them perform.

TikTok grew from a lip-sync app for Gen Z into a global platform where creators and brands of every size compete for the same attention. The features give you the raw capability. Using them consistently and on-trend is what separates content that lands from content that disappears.

The harder, more valuable work is turning that capability into sustained relevance, and it’s the work we do. Vamp designs and runs creator-led growth systems so attention becomes measurable growth, not another video that vanishes from the feed. Talk to us.
