Three steps to uploading your first Instagram Reel

Instagram Reels is set to give TikTok a run for its money, so heres how to upload your first Reel.

Instagram Reels is set to give its competitor, TikTok, a run for its money.

The new short-form video sharing platform is allowing users in over 50 countries to create up to 30-second video clips, edit with music and tools, and upload to the Reels feed, found at the top of the Explore page.

If you haven’t already played around with this new feature, we suggest you follow these three steps to uploading your first Instagram Reel

#1: Select Your Music, Speed, and Filters

To create Reels, open the Instagram Stories camera and select the Reels option. Before shooting your video, you can use a song from the Instagram music library to accompany your reel. Like Stories, you have the option to select which part of a song you want to feature. Or you can use your own original audio.

Then set your timer and countdown, if you want to record your clip hands-free.

Just like Instagram Stories, you can select an effect in Instagram’s effects gallery, and record multiple clips using different effects. Next, pick the speed of the video or audio you selected.

#2: Shoot Your Video

To record your Instagram Reels, press and hold the capture button. You will see a progress indicator at the top of the screen as you record. You can record your reels in a series of clips, all at once or using video uploads from your gallery.

Once you’re done recording, you can add other effects to your videos, like GIFs, stickers, and text. You can also select at what specific points you want your text to appear.

Step #3: Hit Share!

Once you’re done recording, tap the next button to share your Instagram reel.

When sharing Instagram Reels, you can add a caption, hashtags, tag friends, edit the video thumbnail and select where you want it to be shared.

If you have a public Instagram account, you can share your reel to a dedicated space in Explore, where it has the chance to be seen and discovered by the wider Instagram community. You can also share your reel with your followers by posting it to your Instagram feed where it will appear under a new reels section on your profile.

If you have a private account, your reels will only be shared to your feed. People who don’t follow you will not be able to use original audio from your reels and won’t be shareable.
