Here’s everything you need to know about getting that all important blue check

What does getting verified on TikTok mean?

When you see a blue check on someone’s TikTok account, it means that TikTok has verified that the account belongs to the person or brand it says it represents.

Seeing a blue check means you can trust that the account you’re following belongs to the real person or company rather than someone impersonating them.

Why should I get verified on TikTok?

From a creator’s perspective, having the blue check and being verified on TikTok has three big advantages:

  1. Authenticity: The blue checkmark is like having a digital identity card as it signifies that the account is legitimate. As a result, people are more likely to trust what you post
  2. Exposure: Rumours abound that TikTok’s algorithm favours verified accounts. While that isn’t a confirmed fact, your exposure will increase as other users are more likely to engage with verified TikTok accounts
  3. Growth: Other companies and influencers may be more likely to collaborate or partner with you if your account has been verified. So that blue check can help to grow not only your TikTok followers, but your business too

Can a normal person get verified on TikTok?

Well first of all, what makes someone  a ‘normal’ person anyway? But jokes aside, the great news is that anyone can get verified on TikTok.

While historically, it was only celebrities, big brands, and public figures who were awarded the blue check, nowadays regular people who’ve made a significant impact on the TikTok platform can also get verified.

How many followers or views do you need to get verified on TikTok?

When it comes to getting verified on TikTok, the number of followers you have doesn’t actually matter. You can have 20 followers or 1.5 million. And the equally great news is that your view count isn’t a factor in deciding whether your TikTok account will be verified either.

How to request verification on TikTok

What started out as a mysterious, invite-only approach to TikTok verification has now evolved into an easy and transparent application process. Users can now apply for the blue check themselves through the app or by completing an online form.

Here are the exact steps to follow:

  1. In the TikTok app, tap Profile at the bottom
  2. Tap the Menu button at the top
  3. Tap Settings and privacy
  4. Tap Account, then tap Verification
    – If you’re registered as a business account, then you can only apply for business verification
    – If you’re registered as a personal account, then you can apply for personal and institutional verifications
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions in the app to finalise and submit your TikTok verification request

To support your verification request, TikTok will ask you to provide examples of credible, written media coverage, such as news articles. If you don’t have any media coverage samples, you could run a short PR campaign before requesting verification to strengthen your application.

If TikTok declines your application for a blue check, you’ll be able to submit a new request, but it won’t be reviewed until 30 days after you last applied.

The in-app verification feature isn’t available to users in all countries. If you try to follow the steps and can’t see the verification option, you can submit your request to get verified by using TikTok’s online form.

How does TikTok decide who to verify with a blue check?

Before granting a verified badge on TikTok, a number of factors will be considered to make sure you meet all requirements:

  •  Your account must be active: You must have logged into your account within the past six months
  • Your account must be authentic: It needs to represent a real person, business, or entity
  • Your account must be complete: It needs to include a username, bio, profile photo, and at least one video, and be set as a public account
  • Your account must be notable: The brand or person must be featured in multiple news sources (be aware that press releases and sponsored or paid media won’t be accepted as examples)
  • Your account must be secure: It needs to have 2-step verification using a verified email

5 tips to get verified on TikTok

You may be eager to get your verification application submitted, but it’s worth checking that your account is in a good place before applying to increase your chances of approval.

Here are our five top tips to maximising your chances of securing that coveted blue checkmark:

  • Be clear in your niche: Decide who you want to speak to and what you want to speak to them about. Creating TikTok content that has a clear niche establishes your account as a consistent source of information.
  • Embrace trends and challenges: Although joining in with trends, challenges, and popular hashtags isn’t a requirement for verification, it can boost your discoverability. It also shows your engagement within the TikTok community, which can only be a good thing.
  • Collaborate and network: Connect with other creators, both on and off the platform to help boost your visibility and demonstrate that you’re an engaged and active TikTok user.
  • Be featured in the media: This is a really important one as it’s part of TikTok’s verification process. Put yourself forward to be featured in news articles, podcasts, and online platforms to establish yourself as a notable figure.
  • Be consistent: If you look at verified TikTok accounts, one thing they have in common is consistency. They’re very active on the platform, creating engaging content regularly to stand out from the crowd.

Frequently asked questions about the verified check on TikTok

We know we’ve already covered a lot in this guide, but you may still have some unanswered questions or be skimming through (we all do it). So, here’s our roundup of the most frequently asked questions.

What does the blue check mean on TikTok?

The blue check on TikTok verifies that the platform has confirmed the account holder is who they say they are. It helps other platform users to trust that it’s the real person or business, rather than a fan, scam, or parody account.

Do you get paid if you’re verified on TikTok?

Verified TikTok accounts don’t receive direct payments from the platform unless they opt in to TikTok’s Creator Fund. However, if you’re given the blue check, you’re likely to attract more attention from other brands or influencers keen to collaborate with you.

What happens if you get declined for a blue check?

If you get declined for a blue check on TikTok, the good news is that you can reapply. TikTok will review a subsequent verification application 30 days after your last request. However, before you reapply, make sure that you’re addressing the reason you were turned down. For example, you might need to get more press coverage.

Can you buy verification on TikTok?

TikTok doesn’t charge you to get verified. Be careful of any companies claiming to get you verified in return for payment as these could be scams. You can easily apply for verification yourself either through the app, or by using the online form.

Can more than one person in my business apply for TikTok verification?

TikTok will only accept one verification request per business or person, except in unique circumstances like language-specific accounts, or other branded and affiliated accounts.

Can I use any email address to apply for TikTok verification?

If you’re applying for TikTok verification for your business, the email address you provide in your request must clearly represent your company. If you can’t provide that, TikTok might ask you for additional documentation.

Does my username matter for TikTok verification?

If you’d like to get TikTok verified as a business, your username should be similar to your business name.

Can a TikTok blue check be removed?

All accounts, even verified ones, must meet TikTok’s community guidelines and terms of service to keep the platform fun and safe for everyone. A verified badge doesn’t mean that TikTok endorses your content and they still have the right to remove verified status if they believe you’ve breached their community guidelines.

Can you collaborate with verified TikTok accounts if you don’t have a blue check?

Although blue checks are great for opening doors to new collaborations, you can still partner with brands and influencers before you’re verified yourself (even if they have the blue check).
