TikTok hashtag challenge vs Branded Hashtag Challenge: the difference

TikTok hashtag challenge vs Branded Hashtag Challenge: the difference

A TikTok hashtag challenge is organic and creator-led; a Branded Hashtag Challenge (BHC) is the same format, paid for and owned by a brand.

The difference is ownership and distribution. A hashtag challenge spreads because a community decides to join in. A Branded Hashtag Challenge buys that participation a guaranteed home, a dedicated landing page on TikTok’s Discover feed, and engineers the rest around creators who can make people want to take part.

Both turn audiences from viewers into participants. That shift, from watching content to making it, is what makes the format work on TikTok and nowhere else quite as well. Below: what each one is, why brands put money behind a BHC, and how to build one that actually compounds.

The short version:

  • A hashtag challenge is organic, usually started by a creator, and spreads on its own.
  • A Branded Hashtag Challenge (BHC) is a paid ad format a brand owns, with a dedicated Discover landing page.
  • BHCs convert because they make the audience the campaign, not the spectator. TikTok reports a median 17.5% engagement rate.
  • The format rewards creative freedom and the right creators. It punishes briefs that feel like ads.

What is a TikTok hashtag challenge?

A hashtag challenge is an organic TikTok trend built around a single hashtag that lets anyone find, join and add to it. Think of the #SilhouetteChallenge or the #BlindingLightsChallenge, a simple, repeatable idea, from a dance routine to a makeup look, that people make their own.

When someone takes part, they film their own version and add the challenge hashtag to the caption. That links their video to the hashtag’s feed and improves its odds of reaching the For You Page of users already engaged with the trend.

Hashtag challenges are usually kicked off by established creators and gain traction organically. No brand owns them. No one can guarantee the outcome. That unpredictability is exactly what a Branded Hashtag Challenge is designed to remove.

What is a Branded Hashtag Challenge (BHC)?

A Branded Hashtag Challenge is a paid version of the same format. A brand sponsors the challenge and, in return, gets a guaranteed slot on TikTok’s Discover page. It’s one of TikTok’s headline ad products, and it turns a creative idea into owned distribution.

When a user taps a Branded Hashtag, they land on a dedicated page carrying the brand’s logo, a link to its site, a description of the challenge, and every video using the hashtag. The brand sets the concept, then partners with creators to spread awareness, drive participation and give the trend its first wave of momentum.

The mechanics are an ad buy. What makes it work is that it doesn’t feel like one.

Why do brands invest in a Branded Hashtag Challenge?

Because the landing page makes participation measurable, and the format makes participation likely. A BHC routes attention to a destination you control, while the challenge mechanic keeps the whole thing feeling native to TikTok rather than imposed on it. That combination is what drives the results below.

It sparks UGC at scale

In TikTok’s own words, Branded Hashtag Challenges “turn consumers from passive onlookers to active participants.” Instead of running a campaign for an audience to watch, a BHC invites them into it.

That turns a target audience into “co-creators, decision-makers, followers, buyers, and most importantly: ambassadors.” E.L.F.’s #EyesLipsFace is the textbook case: thousands of user-generated videos that powered the reach of the whole campaign, distribution the brand earned rather than bought outright.

It drives genuine engagement

User-generated content holds attention because it looks like everything else on the For You Page. A BHC inherits that native feel, and the numbers follow.

TikTok reports a median engagement rate of 17.5% for Branded Hashtag Challenges, against a sub-1% benchmark on other platforms.

It delivers full-funnel impact

A BHC works from first impression to purchase. TikTok’s research shows the format isn’t only good at awareness. It’s more memorable, and it converts.

The numbers TikTok reports: 4x higher ad recall and 4.5x higher brand awareness versus standard mobile ads, a 2.5x return on ad spend for 90% of BHCs, and a 5x return for half of them.

How do you create an engaging Branded Hashtag Challenge?

TikTok rewards creative freedom. A good BHC gives just enough direction to stay on-brand, and just enough room for people to make it theirs. The brands that get this right treat the brief as a starting point, not a script.

Make it relevant and relatable

A challenge only spreads if it belongs on the platform and connects to what your audience already cares about. When you shape the concept, picture how a participant’s video sits inside the For You Page. Spontaneity should feel built in, not bolted on.

It also has to be relevant to your brand. Fashion-led audiences won’t join a trend that reads like it was made for car enthusiasts. Relevance is the filter, both ways.

Keep it short, simple and easy to join

A long or fiddly challenge loses people before they start. The best BHCs are quick to grasp and take under a minute to film and post. The lower the effort to take part, the more user-generated content you get, and participation is the whole point.

Collaborate with the right creators

Creators are the distribution layer of a BHC. They set the tone, model the format, and give their communities permission to join in. Their relationship with their audience is what turns a brand idea into a trend.

That’s the difference between hoping a challenge catches and building it to. The right creators aren’t a media buy bolted on at the end. They’re the system that makes participation happen, matched to your brand and briefed to perform. It’s the part most brands underestimate, and the part we engineer.

Brands that have built hashtag challenges with Vamp

#RimmelHasYouCovered

To raise awareness and drive engagement around Rimmel London’s new Lasting Finish 25-Hour Foundation, the global beauty brand partnered with Vamp on the #RimmelHasYouCovered campaign.

We selected nine creators based on how well they represented the Rimmel London brand and voice, then briefed them to make TikToks showing why the foundation was their best-kept beauty secret. The brief stayed deliberately open, so each creator could shoot in their own style and to their own audience.

The campaign delivered on its awareness and engagement objectives: over 1.1M impressions, 101.7K engagements and almost 1.8k hours (75 days) of total watch time.

#ClearYourHead with Tangle Teezer

We ran another awareness and engagement campaign with Tangle Teezer, promoting its scalp exfoliator and massager brush.

Eleven creators joined the #ClearYourHead campaign with a choice of two formats: a comedic video capturing their best blind-reacts to using the tool in the shower or bath, or a wellness-focused video showing how it delivers a deep, soothing massage that hits pressure points and releases tension.

The campaign met its awareness and engagement goals with over 703K impressions, 68.9K engagements and almost 1.8k hours (75 days) of total watch time.

Origins’ #GetUnreadyWithMe

For its first TikTok campaign with Vamp, Origins tapped the existing #GetUnreadyWithMe hashtag to ride a live beauty trend and reach skincare-loving Gen Z.

To drive product awareness, build advocacy and create original content for Origins cleansers, we selected nine creators to film a ‘get unready with me’ video, starting in full glam, then using the Origins range to remove their makeup and prep their skin for the night.

By plugging into a trend already in motion, Origins achieved 243K hours of total watch time, over a week and a half of view time, alongside more than 116K impressions and 9K engagements.

FAQs

What’s the main difference between a hashtag challenge and a Branded Hashtag Challenge?

Ownership and distribution. A hashtag challenge is organic and creator-led. Anyone can start one and no brand owns it. A Branded Hashtag Challenge is a paid TikTok ad format a brand owns, complete with a dedicated landing page on the Discover feed.

Is a Branded Hashtag Challenge worth the investment?

For the right objective, yes. TikTok reports a median 17.5% engagement rate, 4x higher ad recall, 4.5x higher brand awareness and a 2.5x–5x return on ad spend. The format earns participation and user-generated content you’d struggle to buy directly, but only if the creative and the creators are right.

Do I need creators to run a Branded Hashtag Challenge?

In practice, yes. Creators give the challenge its first wave of credible participation and show their communities how to take part. A BHC without the right creators is a landing page waiting for an audience that never arrives.

How do I make a TikTok challenge go beyond awareness?

Tie it to a concept that’s relevant to both your brand and the platform, keep it under a minute to film, leave room for creative interpretation, and brief creators who can make people want to join. Then measure participation and downstream performance, not just impressions.

A great Branded Hashtag Challenge can spark a wave of participation. The harder, more valuable work is turning that moment into sustained relevance: the right creators, the right concept, and the measurement to know what to do next.

That’s the work we do. Vamp is a tech-enabled influencer marketing agency: we design creator-led growth systems and run the engine behind them, so attention on TikTok becomes measurable growth rather than a one-off spike. Talk to us.
