How to boost Instagram Reels as ads: a brand's guide

To boost an Instagram Reel as an ad, open the Reel on your profile, tap the three dots, choose 'Boost', then set your goal, audience, budget and duration. Instagram turns the organic Reel into a paid ad that runs across feed, Stories, the Reels tab and Explore.

That’s the mechanic. The harder question is which Reels deserve the spend, and how to make the money work once it’s behind them. Boosting a weak Reel just buys reach for content that already failed to earn attention. Boosting a proven one compounds it.

This guide covers how to boost Instagram Reels as ads, the requirements that catch brands out, and three tactics our paid media team uses to lift performance, the same discipline we apply when we run paid amplification on top of creator content for the brands we partner with.

The short version:

  • Any business or creator account can boost an eligible Reel into a paid ad from inside the Instagram app.
  • Eligibility rules apply: the right aspect ratio, no third-party IP (copyrighted music, GIFs, stickers, filters), and not cross-posted to Facebook.
  • Boosted Reels appear in feed, Stories, the Reels tab and Explore.
  • The biggest lever isn’t the boost settings. It’s choosing content that already performs organically, then putting paid behind it.

Why boost Instagram Reels as ads?

Reels is Instagram’s most distributed format, and short-form video is where discovery now happens. Boosting a Reel takes content that’s already earning attention and extends it to audiences who haven’t found you yet, driving awareness, traffic, engagement and return on ad spend, with a clean path to purchase.

That last point matters for commerce. 67% of consumers said their online purchasing increased since the start of the pandemic. Pairing a Reel that holds attention with ‘Shop now’ functionality takes viewers straight to your product, turning scrollers into shoppers in a few taps.

Where do boosted Reels appear?

Boosted Reels surface in feed, in Stories, in the Reels tab and on the Explore page. Instagram spreads them across every discovery surface, which is what makes the format useful for reaching audiences who don’t already follow you.

What are the requirements to boost a Reel?

Not every Reel qualifies. Before you plan a boost, check it against Instagram’s rules:

  • Aspect ratio. Reels should be vertical (9:16) to run cleanly as an ad.
  • No third-party IP. Reels using copyrighted music, GIFs, interactive stickers or camera filters can’t be boosted, a common reason eligible-looking content gets blocked.
  • Not cross-posted to Facebook. Reels shared to Facebook can’t be turned into boosted ads.

Eligibility rules change, so confirm the current requirements in the app before you build the Reel, not after. Designing for boost-eligibility from the start saves you re-shooting content that can’t run.

How do you boost a Reel in the Instagram app?

The flow lives entirely inside the app:

1. Find the Reel on your profile, tap the three dots near the Share button, and select Boost.

2. If the Reel is eligible, you’ll land on the Goal page. Choose the outcome you want: more profile visits, more website visits, or more engagement.

3. Tap Next to reach the Define your audience page, where you set targeting.

4. Set your budget and the duration of the ad.

5. Review the ad. When it’s right, tap Boost. Instagram reviews it and pushes it live, and you can switch it off at any time.

6. While it runs, check Insights to see how it’s performing, and to learn which Reels formats your audience actually responds to.

Three tactics to increase the performance of your boosted Reels

The boost button is the easy part. Performance comes from what you put behind it. Drawing on Meta’s video research and how our paid media team works, here are three tactics that consistently lift results.

1. Only boost content that already performs organically

This is the first thing our paid media team checks before putting spend behind anything. If a Reel earns attention organically, it’s far more likely to perform as an ad. Boosting is amplification, not resuscitation. Applied with discipline, this approach has driven up to 113x ROAS for the brands we work with.

How do you know a Reel is performing? Start with views and engagement, the higher, the better. Then read the comments. Are people finding it interesting, useful, worth responding to? Positive, substantive comments are a stronger signal than raw view count. They tell you the content connected, not just that it appeared.

2. Earn the first few seconds

Attention on Reels is decided fast. Viewers commit to a video or scroll past it in seconds, so the opening frames carry disproportionate weight for ad recall, brand awareness and purchase intent. Showing your brand in the first three seconds drives 44% more brand interest than showing it at the end.

Treat the first ten seconds as the whole pitch. Lead with the brand, then land your key message, the launch, the offer, the collection, before the window closes. Strong transitions and language that feels native to Instagram keep viewers watching; anything that reads like a TV ad bolted onto a vertical video gets scrolled.

3. Boost creator content, not just brand content

Boosting works best when the content underneath it was built for the platform, and creators build for the platform by default. They produce short-form video that holds attention because that’s the native language of their audience, and they bring credibility a brand-made ad can’t manufacture on its own.

How we see it: paid amplification and creator content aren’t two tactics, they’re one system. The strongest results come from boosting creator Reels using the original content, caption and creator handle, so the ad stays native to the feed and the targeting does the rest. That’s the work we do. We design the creator content, then run the paid media on top of it, so organic relevance and paid reach compound instead of competing.

Knowing how to boost a Reel is table stakes. Building a creator-led system where the right content gets made, proven organically, and amplified with precision is the harder, more valuable problem, and it’s the one we solve.
