Instagram link stickers: how they work and why they matter

The Instagram link sticker lets anyone, regardless of follower count, add a tappable external link to their Story.
It replaced the old “swipe up” feature, which was locked to accounts with more than 10,000 followers. When Instagram opened link stickers to every account, it removed the single biggest barrier between a creator and a click-through. Today, any creator or brand can send Story viewers straight to a product page, a blog, or a landing page, no follower threshold required.
That shift quietly rewired the economics of Story traffic. The accounts that drive the strongest action are often not the largest. They’re the most trusted. Link stickers gave that trust somewhere to go.
The short version:
- The link sticker is a tappable Story sticker that drives viewers to any external URL.
- It replaced the swipe-up function and is available to every account, no follower minimum.
- It works in organic Stories only. Story ads still use the ad call-to-action.
- For brands, the value isn’t the link itself. It’s which creators can make people tap it.
What is the Instagram link sticker?
Like Instagram’s poll and question stickers, the link sticker is an interactive feature you add to a Story to send viewers to an external site: an ecommerce page, a blog, a newsletter subscribe form. Viewers tap it rather than swiping up.
The sticker fully replaced the swipe-up function. Instagram tested it through 2021, watching how people used links and keeping a close eye on spam and misinformation, before rolling it out to all accounts. It has been the standard way to link out of organic Stories ever since.
Why did the link sticker replace swipe-up?
Three reasons drove the change, and all three still shape how Stories work today:
It streamlined Story creation. Aside from reactions and replies, swipe-up was the only interactive Story feature that wasn’t a sticker. Folding links into the sticker menu put every interactive tool in one place.
It gave creators more control. Like other stickers, the link sticker can be restyled with a tap and placed anywhere on the frame, so the link sits where it earns the most attention, not in a fixed bar at the bottom.
It opened the door to engagement. Under swipe-up, viewers couldn’t quickly react or reply to a linked Story. With the sticker, they can, so a link no longer kills the conversation around the post.

Can link stickers be used in Story ads?
No. Link stickers work in organic Stories only. Story ads still use the standard ad call-to-action rather than a sticker.
Creators can add a Paid Partnership tag to an organic Story that uses a link sticker. You’ll find it under the “Branded Content” tools in the Story editing screen. But promoting a Story that carries both a Paid Partnership tag and a link sticker is disabled. The practical rule: if you plan to put paid spend behind a Story, don’t build it around a link sticker.
How does the Instagram link sticker work?
Here’s how to add one:
- Capture or upload content to your Story.
- Open the sticker menu.
- Tap the link sticker, then enter the external URL you want to send viewers to.
- Place it anywhere on the frame. Tap to change styles, pinch or expand to resize, then tap share.
- Your Story stays live for 24 hours for viewers to interact with.
Pro tip: check the link sticker’s performance under the Story’s Insights to see how many people tapped through. That tap-rate is your real signal. It tells you whether the content earned the click, not just the impression.
How we see it
A link is only as valuable as the trust behind it. Opening link stickers to every account didn’t make traffic easier; it made the choice of creator the variable that matters. A micro-creator with a tight, high-intent community will out-convert a far larger account with a passive one, every time.
That’s the difference between treating influence as a placement and treating it as a system. The link sticker is a distribution surface. Whether it performs depends on the relevance, trust and consistency of the creator using it, and that’s something you engineer, not something you buy by the click.
FAQs
Who can use the Instagram link sticker?
Everyone. The 10,000-follower minimum that applied to swipe-up was removed. Any account can add a tappable link to its Stories.
What’s the difference between the link sticker and swipe-up?
Swipe-up was a fixed feature limited to large accounts; viewers swiped up to follow a link. The link sticker replaced it entirely. It’s available to all accounts, can be placed and styled anywhere on the frame, and viewers tap it instead of swiping.
Can I see who tapped my link sticker?
You can see how many taps a link sticker received via Story Insights. Instagram surfaces the tap count, which is enough to judge whether the content drove action.
Do link stickers work for affiliate or product links?
Yes. Any valid external URL works, including affiliate, product and landing-page links. Just keep link stickers off Stories you intend to run as paid ads, where promotion with the sticker is disabled.
Turning Story traffic into something that compounds
Knowing how the link sticker works is table stakes. The harder, more valuable problem is choosing the creators whose audiences actually act, and building those relationships into a system that drives traffic month after month, not in one-off bursts.
