Instagram Stories Part 1 – The Basics

Learn the basics on how to use Instagram Stories
VAMP - Instagram Stories - Part 1

Ever wonder how your friends on Instagram create such bright and colourful Stories? Instagram Stories is intuitive just like the rest of the App. There are no digital tours showing you how to utilise stories – instead you are invited to explore and experiment to see what you can uncover and of course it’s ever changing.

We simplified the basics for Part 1 of our 3 part series on how to make the most of your Instagram Stories.

Starting Point

There are a variety of settings to take your photo or video within Insta Stories these include:

Live, literally, a snapshot in real time

Normal, nothing fancy here just ready for you to take a photo using the circle at the bottom of the screen when touched once, or a video by pressing and holding the button down as the colour circles around the button.

Boomerang, playing a short video from start to finish and over again

Rewind, playing a short video from end to start and over again

Hands free which waits a few seconds to begin shooting so you can hit record and have time to step back from the camera

How to add some Jazz to your image or video

Facial recognition filters – set your camera to face you using the circling arrows then select the smiling face. You will see a strip of options for you to select pick one and look into your camera to see it virtually applied to your face – hours of entertainment for kids and adults. This feature is typically used for the face however in our examples below we have used it here to add small butterflies to the image featured below.

Overlay hand written writing – you can add standard test to your image by selecting the Aa button or you can write in your own handwriting by selecting the pen next to it. You can change the style (round tip, flat tip or a iridescent glowing style) thickness of your text (the three dots on the bottom left) and the colour (select one of the coloured dots or press and hold to show a larger array of options).

Add stickers – including location, time in addition to images. Simply swipe up once you have taken your video or image.

Filter the lighting – simply swipe left to change between the present options.

When you post to your story, it appears:
  • On your profile: A colourful ring will appear around your profile picture, and people can tap it to see your story.
  • At the top of the feed: Your profile picture will appear in a row at the top of your followers’ Feeds, and they can tap it to see your story.
  • In Feed around your profile picture next to your posts: When you share a post, a colourful ring will appear around your profile picture in your Feed. People can tap it to see your story.

Photos and videos you share to your story disappear after 24 hours.

To look at who’s seen your story, open your story and there will be a number count in the bottom left corner which is how many people have viewed it. To view who exactly has seen your story by name swipe up on the screen. You’ll see the number of views again as well as the list of names of the people who have seen each photo or video in your story.

  1. Tap in the top left of your screen or swipe right from anywhere in Feed
  2. Take a photo or video, then tap
  3. Type @ followed immediately by their username, then select the person you’d like to mention

When you mention someone in your story, their username will appear in your story with an underline. Anyone who can see your story can tap it to go to their profile.

People you mention will get a push notification telling them that you’ve mentioned them in your story. They’ll also get a direct message from you that includes a preview of your story. This preview disappears from the message thread after 24 hours.
