Instagram Etiquette

Vamp Collective

Instagram is a collaborative community of people connecting regardless of where in the world they live or what they do as a day job. Some users simply use Instagram as a source of inspiration and others use it to showcase their creativity and build a business like you, however no matter what or why you use Instagram there is some basic Instagram etiquette to keep this platform a positive and creative space.

Frequency

Each of you will post at a different frequency to others, for example, some of you may post three times a day and others three times a week. For those of you who are posting multiple photos a day it’s best that you leave a few hours between each photo to ensure that you are not spamming your followers’ feeds. By spacing your posts across a greater period of time you will also increase the reach of your photos to be seen by a wider group of your followers as all of your followers are not on Instagram at the same point in time each day.

Regramming Images

Within Instagram, unlike many other platforms, sharing others’ images is accepted as it’s a way to shout out to other Insta accounts you respect and love to your followers, exposing them to a greater audience. When regramming or simply sharing another person’s image you must credit the creator or at least the source you obtained it from otherwise this is stealing plain and simple.

Responding to comments

Instagram is a community and in order to grow a large and loyal following you should be looking to foster connections with your followers and the simplest way to do this is to engage with them in conversation. Whilst not all comments need a response, such as Emojis and your followers tagging other friends, if someone asks a question or writes a nice comment take this opportunity to respond and start a conversation. As your followers begin to see you engaging with your community they will be more likely to start commenting and engaging with you further.

Respecting the community

As an influencer who is building their career through Instagram you must be respectful of the Instagram community, refrain from posting self-promoting comments on a image that belongs to another influencer or brand as this spams their comment feed. You can absolutely edge in a conversation or comment on another’s post but don’t remove the focus and detract from the owner’s feed. This would be like attending someones birthday party then telling everyone there that you are hosting an awesome dinner party just round the corner at your house and inviting them all round. The birthday girl would have done all the work to get the right people there and to show up and then you swoop in and send them all elsewhere – not very nice.

Hashtags

The number of hashtags you use on Instagram will vary depending on your following and your own Instagram style. In order to keep the focus on your caption we recommend that you feature no more than 2-3 hashtags in your post copy so the hashtags don’t take centre stage. So what does that mean for those using hashtags to attract new followers and gain greater awareness? After you have posted your image and caption, simply add a comment on the picture containing the remaining hashtags. The reasoning for this is that after a few additional comments it will no longer be shown to your followers but still remain in the search results for those hashtags, keeping your feed clear of hashtag spam.
